Trump posts US map spanning Canada, Mexico and Greenland

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social on Monday that covered much of North America with the U.S. flag. The image labeled the region “United States of America” and placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath the flag design. It also appeared to cover Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump added no written explanation. The map retained labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America.

Trump's North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.
Trump’s North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.

Trump shared the image at 10:43 a.m. EDT on Sept. 7 through his official Truth Social account. The post contained no policy directive and announced no legal change to U.S. borders. Canada and Mexico remain sovereign countries with internationally recognized borders. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, while Iceland remains an independent state. The image did not describe any process for changing those arrangements or the status of other territories.

The map followed several other geography-focused posts from Trump during the same Labor Day posting spree. Minutes earlier, he shared images that replaced New Mexico’s name with “New America.” In August, he promoted “Lake America” as a replacement name for Lake Ontario. His administration had already directed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico. Trump has also repeatedly called for U.S. acquisition of Greenland, citing national security. Denmark and Greenland have rejected that proposal.

Mexico reaffirms sovereignty after Trump map post

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the map by reaffirming Mexico’s sovereignty. She said Mexico remains free, independent and sovereign and would not become a colony or protectorate of another country. Her response came during September, when Mexico marks national independence celebrations. Trump’s image placed Mexico under the same U.S. flag overlay that stretched across Canada and other neighboring areas. The post did not cite any treaty, law or agreement affecting the U.S.-Mexico border.

The map also covered Canada with the U.S. flag. Trump has repeatedly raised the idea of Canada becoming part of the United States during his second term. On the same day, he threatened to block Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier from U.S. sales unless it manufactures planes domestically. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods took effect Tuesday after trade talks stalled. Those trade measures are separate from the map and did not change the countries’ border.

Greenland remains part of broader territorial dispute

The image also placed Greenland beneath the flag design. Trump has repeatedly said the United States should acquire the Arctic territory and has cited national security. Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected U.S. ownership. On Sept. 7, the European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership package for Greenland covering 2026 and 2027. Denmark also sent conscripts to Greenland in early September for Arctic training under its expanded defense program.

The original Truth Social map post remained without a caption or explanation. It did not set out a government action, border change or territorial agreement. The countries and territories shown under the U.S. flag continue under their existing legal and constitutional arrangements. Mexico has publicly reaffirmed its sovereignty, while Denmark and Greenland continue to reject U.S. acquisition of Greenland. Canada also remains an independent sovereign state. Trump attached no document or policy text that changed the territorial status shown on the map.
